Join us for our annual business meeting, where we will recap our current & proposed annual budget, vote to approve new board members, and hear a wonderful presentation by Stephanie Kingsnorth, AIA, LEED EP Principal at Pfeiffer Partners located in Los Angeles, CA.Â
Description:Â Sustainability is more than just achieving a metric or filling out a checklist. No single metric is used as a universal standard or is best suited for reviving or repurposing existing buildings. Yet, the embodied carbon and embodied energy that exists within these buildings are undeniable.
This session shares insights from both the owner’s and architect’s perspectives on different sustainability approaches. Using two distinct rehabilitation projects as a springboard for learning, you’ll review the metrics that were used for each project—one originally constructed in the 1930s (currently certified at LEED Gold and aiming for Platinum) and the other built in the 1960s, which achieved net-zero.
Learning Objectives:Â
- Identify the range of sustainability options and approaches available for existing buildings.
- Understand which sustainability options are best for your building, relative to LEED, net-zero (carbon or energy), and other standards/certifications.
- Explore the cost implications for each approach based on original construction materials and architectural styles for existing structures.
- Identify sustainability elements that may benefit from a hybrid approach to reach the client’s goals, whether environmental, financial, or aesthetic.
