Course Description: Join the partners of Patterhn Ives for three short stories that examine the timeless spirit of Place through work that aspires to impart a positive, lasting record through careful listening, focused observation, insightful research, environmental stewardship, innovation, and collaboration.

Capturing unfound potential – the plus one – through the lens of: Care & Curiosity / Memory & Meaning / Poetic & Pragmatic / Obstacles & Opportunities.

HSW Justification:

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT: Share insight into small practice leadership and woman-owned business enterprises.

PROGRAMMING & ANALYSIS: Share site & programmatic analysis that inform the design process.

PROJECT PLANNING & DESIGN: Exhibit drawings & documents that examine precise placement and phasing of the work in support of project goals.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT & DOCUMENTATION: Exhibit and examine construction document excerpts that address building performance and standard of care.

CONSTRUCTION & EVALUATION: Share construction photographs and submittals that exhibit attention to procurement and execution of the work.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Consider long-term solutions within an economy of means and promote the tenet of cultivation over consumption.
  2. Foster the importance of project siting to extend reach, community engagement, and accessibility.
  3. Understand the approach to integrated building systems and building performance.
  4. Review benefits of historic restoration & preservation as a complement to contemporary practice.
  5. Examine the benefits and needs of post-pandemic outdoor learning environments and performance venues.
  6. Promote the health and wellness of occupants by way of equitable access, acoustics, daylight, air, landscape, and other engagement of the senses and site
