In less than 20 years, we have witnessed a transformation in Knoxville and surrounding region. Our neighborhoods to the south, north, east, and west have experienced healthy growth. Downtown Knoxville has been transformed from being mostly vacant after work hours into a thriving city center with people and activity around the clock. And we are just getting started. According to UT’s Center for Business and Economic Research, by 2040 – just over 20 years from today – it is projected that our region will grow by some 260,000 people, most of that being in Knox County. That is a projected growth rate of 38% for Knox County compared to 33% for the state and 23% for the nation.
This is exciting! And even more so as we see one national publication after another write about what we already know – that this is great city with a terrific food scene, wonderful arts and culture, and tremendous outdoor opportunities. And it gets better every single day. In some way, I am sure most of us have had a hand, along with a very long list of others, in cultivating what makes Knoxville so great today. But I am more excited about our momentum and imagining what our region can become as we work together to help transform Knoxville into a truly remarkable 21st Century City.
Together – as architects, engineers, builders, etc. – we shape the future. Alongside our clients, we plan and dream and build the cities of tomorrow. That is our job. It is our privilege and responsibility. The relationships we have built over many years, personally and professionally, has helped shape the community we proudly call home. It is those relationships that will shape Knoxville’s future.
Please join with AIA East Tennessee as we work together to create one voice for our industry in leading our region into the 21st Century.
I invite each of you to become an Allied Member of our East Tennessee Chapter. In doing so, you will receive the same enrichment and social benefits of AIA members.
I ask your companies to join us as Partners in support of our mission.
- Membership Enrichment. Together we will continue to bring high caliber speakers to our region to inspire our membership to do big things.
- Elevate Public Awareness. Last year Architecture Week touched over 800 people. Together we can increase the reach of our public engagement programs as we promote the industry and work to elevate public awareness and appreciation.
- Advocate for the Built Environment. Together we will advocate for the interests of the industry with our local elected officials and work to influence change through efforts like ReCode Knoxville.
And lastly, I invite you to consider joining a committee. It is a great way to build relationships and this is where the real work of our chapter takes place. We want you to join us in shaping our chapter, our industry, and our city.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Lisa Hoskins, AIA
2019 President, AIA East Tennessee
