Breeding from Dallas\, TX.  \n\n\n\nDescription: The purpose of this presentation is to introduce and begin to examine the existence\, relationship\, and meaning of the physical\, spatial\, and spiritual agency between a constructed black church house and a black cemetery in the Jim Crow south of the late 19th to early 20th century America. \n\n\n\nCEU: 1 HSW l LU \n\n\n\nHSW Justification: Aspects of architecture that engender demonstrable positive emotional responses from\, or enable equal access by\, users of buildings or sites. In this presentation\, the application of ‘Welfare’ shall introduce the emotional and cultural relationship between African Americans and the church houses they constructed and the cemetery sites they created. \n\n\n\nThis presentation shall also look at the value of historic preservation applied to late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture and site design within the cultural aspects of African American cemeteries. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:  \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to the value of Afrocentric building material culture.\n\n\n\nUnderstanding the relationship between the Afrocentric religious experience from the living to the afterlife within a physical context.\n\n\n\nInquiry into the African American religious experience in introducing historical African worship practices.\n\n\n\nPresent an architectural examination of the stylistic forms of building design and a spatial examination of site design for the afterlife experience.

She has experienced various project types\, allowing her to switch gears quickly and be flexible with timeframes and work scopes. A graduate of The University of Tennessee School of Architecture in 2004\, Michelle is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and an Associate member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). She also obtained her LEED AP Status in 2007 in the Existing Building O+M category and always looks for a way to bring sustainability into every project\, no matter the scale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndrew Newman\, AIA- BarberMcMurry Architects\n\n\n\nDrew is a passionate\, process-oriented architect with strong design and a fervor for innovation\, integrity\, inclusivity\, and collaboration. He has over 10 years of experience in projects\, including office\, healthcare\, and education spaces. His focus is on interpreting and distilling the client’s design objectives\, budget\, and program aspirations into a creative\, memorable solution. Drew is a Cincinnati native who appreciates art\, architecture\, history\, and culture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Searle\, AIA- Sanders Pace Architecture\n\n\n\nAfter receiving his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Tennessee in 2012\, Scott worked as an Intern Architect at McCarty Holsaple McCarty.  During his time there\, he contributed to various project types and sizes.  In 2014\, he ventured to the Pacific Northwest to gain experience designing highly unique modern homes with David Coleman Architecture in Seattle\, Washington.  Many of his projects have been featured in print and online design publications.  In 2020\, Scott joined Sanders Pace Architecture\, where he focused on the firm’s growing portfolio of single-family residential projects.  His approach to design is elemental\, applying timeless architectural principles to modern challenges and contexts.  He is driven by the belief that a well-designed space plays a key role in the joy of everyday life.
