SUMMARY:Tri-Cities Tech Session- Nick Shaw\, CPHC\, PHIUS Certified Builder
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA East Tennessee for a presentation by Nick Shaw\, CPHC\, PHIUS Certified Builder\, product consultant for 475 High Performance Building Supply. \nDescription: Foam Free High-Performance Building Enclosures present a clear and practical guide to achieving the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures while eliminating foam. The growing performance demands of air control\, vapor control\, thermal control\, health\, and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation\, dominant in today’s high-performance marketplace\, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance. This presentation is a careful look at how to do it. \nLearning Objectives:  \n1. Define what qualities differentiate high-performance enclosures from typical construction and how those qualities are evolving.  \n2. Describe practitioner concerns of foam insulation hindering efforts to meet the evolving high-performance qualities. \n3. Describe how a foam-free enclosure can more robustly achieve the qualities of high performance.  \n4. Describe practical methodologies practitioners can implement to successfully produce a high performance that is foam-free.  \nCE Credit: 1 HSW l LU \nWhen: Tuesday\, May 9th at 11:50 am EST \n\nDoors Open at 11:30 am\nPresentation starts at 11:50am\n\nWhere: In-person and Online via ZOOM \n\nIn-Person: Johnson City Food City\nOnline: Via ZOOM\n\nPurchase ticket HERE

SUMMARY:Design Feed: Marica McKeel\, AIA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Marica McKeel\, AIA \, founder and principal of Studio MM located in NY.  \nDescription: Studio MM brings thirteen years of experience to each of their modern residential architecture projects. The complexity of projects\, the size of the studio\, the type of clients and the scope of the studio’s work have all changed dramatically over the past decade. In this lecture\, Marica McKeel will trace the evolution of the firm through architectural detailing and share key lessons learned. This narrow framework will be used to illuminate how a seemingly small choice to detail or not to detail has ramifications on studio structure\, contractor relationships\, project success\, and the upward trajectory of a small residential studio. \nLearning Objective 1:Examine the evolution of a small residential architecture firm over the past decade through the lens of architectural detailing \nLearning Objective 2:Understand the staff\, studio\, client and contractor ramifications of thorough detailing on residential projects \nLearning Objective 3:Explore key projects that have been turning points in the studio’s growth and approach to detailing \nLearning Objective 4:Understanding that the value of a well-detailed home to the health and well-being of its occupants is not to be dismissed or discounted\, even on smaller or lower budget projects. \nPurchase your Online and In-Person Ticket HERE.

SUMMARY:Design Feed: Brad Collett\, ASLA\, LEED AP
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Brad Collett\, ASLA\, LEED AP with Tennessee Riverline Partnership in Knoxville\, TN. Description: The Tennessee RiverLine reframes the Tennessee River\, adjacent public lands\, and Tennessee River communities as a 1.2 million acre “River Park” that functions locally and regionally\, thereby positioning the Tennessee River as an accessible quality of life amenity for Valley residents and an international destination for long-distance flatwater paddling. By providing a collaborative framework for a region\, communities\, and individuals to transform their relationship with the Tennessee River\, the Tennessee RiverLine is equally an innovative strategy to catalyze economic development and entrepreneurship\, promote public health and active lifestyles\, ensure equitable access to river spaces and experiences\, and inspire a culture of resource stewardship among generations of diverse valley residents\, ecotourists and visiting adventure enthusiasts. This presentation shares insight to the role of design and designers in this transformation in East Tennessee and across the region.Learning Objectives:  \n\nUnderstand the vision and origins of the Tennessee RiverLine; a historic regional economic development\, public health\, and environmental stewardship initiative that stretches 652 miles throughout 32 counties in 4 states.\nProvide insight to the role of design and designers in transforming the way a region\, communities\, and individuals who call each home engage without most valuable\, and most underutilized\, natural and cultural resource\nLearn how designers are using One Health principles to develop innovative solutions to shoreline erosion on the Tennessee RiverLine. \n\nPurchase your online or in-person ticket HERE.

SUMMARY:Tri-Cities Tech Session: Michael Sørensen Lecture and Membership Feedback Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Digital Speaker: Michael Sorenson– Partner and Design Director with Henning Larsen\, located in NYC\, NY. \nDescription: Henning Larsen strives to create sustainable societies where people and nature flourish. Our projects are more than designs; they are solutions to specific challenges. As an interdisciplinary practice working across architecture\, landscape\, urbanism\, interior\, graphic and lighting design\, Henning Larsen challenges conventional practices to co-create\, innovate\, and cultivate desirable futures through design. Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen whose legacy we carry today\, we navigate the complex connections that bind together our built environment\, ecological systems\, and societies at large. \nAt Henning Larsen\, we design architecture as a collection of actions\, not as objects. Rather than autonomous objects\, architecture is a medium for engagement and connection between nature\, people\, and communities. We will explore the 60+ years of our firm and how our methodology has evolved as our practice has expanded from a small studio to a global interdisciplinary practice. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nExplore various approaches to “people-first design” and how nature and community-driven design are integrated into projects in various cultures and climates.\nDiscuss how the studio’s methodology has evolved over 60+ years as the firm has grown from a local studio to a global design practice.\nAnalyze how the studio’s Scandinavian roots has informed design work in a North American context.\nExplore key built and unbuilt work from the firm’s global portfolio that demonstrates different approaches to connecting people\, nature\, and communities.\n\nTri-Cities Member Note: 2022 AIA East Tennessee President\, Josh Shaffer\, and AIA East TN Component Executive\, Jen McMahon\, will reserve 15-20 minutes of our meeting to discuss the Tri-Cities scholarship fund and will hold time to have our Tri-Cities Members share their feedback\, ask questions\, and share their ideas as to how we can improve our Tri-Cities Area programming!  \nRegister for your In-Person or Online Ticket HERE.

SUMMARY:Design Feed: Edwin Harris\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP & Billy Askey\, AIA\, LEED AP
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Till It’s DoneSpeakers: Edwin Harris\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP and Billy Askey\, AIA\, LEED AP with Evoke Studio in Durham\, NC. Description:  \n\n\n\n\nOur optimistic design philosophy centers on the essential edict that people matter. Purely pragmatic and engineered solutions for the built environment ignore humanity and place. We prioritize moving beyond preconceived solutions to craft unique responses which inspire\, are wholly appropriate\, and are specific to each place. This approach is rooted in embracing the colorful\, complicated kaleidoscope of histories and cultures to create dynamic and enriching spaces for each community we work with\, regardless of means\, cultural backgrounds\, or initial expectations. The resulting work is unique\, authentic\, and a direct result of the communities we serve. The stories our designs tell are the synthesis of each community’s triumphs\, challenges\, histories\, and hopes. Through this process\, we seek to elevate the voices of communities that have often been ignored and create Place Power. \nIn this discussion\, we will frame the idea of Place Power as the guiding light for our practice and describe the “mechanisms” we employ to create it: \n·       Access\, Agency\, + Opportunity \n·       Embracing Authenticity and Fostering Community \n·       Context and Specificity \n·       Intentional Expression \nThese mechanisms are borne out of a rigorous process of engagement\, research\, and analysis. In listening\, researching\, and interpreting the various input and information received during the engagement\, we create spaces that are intentionally expressive of the ambitions and ideals of the institution and community. The built environment matters—these structures last generations and tell the story of what society prioritizes. Therefore\, we are not flippant about the formal gestures of the building; we are intentional and work with stakeholders to ensure the building conveys the message they want their community and the world to see. \nWe will explore these mechanisms through the lens of a varying range of project scales and typologies to demonstrate their utility and applicability. \n \nTickets and Locations: \nWe are offering this lecture in-person\, and online. \n \n\nKnoxville: \n\nThe Foundry \n\n747 Worlds Fair Park Dr\, Knoxville\, TN 37902\n\n\nPurchase Knoxville Tickets\, or an online ticket- CLICK HERE\n\n\nJohnson City: \n\nFood City\n\n920 North State of Franklin Rd\, Johnson City\, TN\n\n\nPurchase Johnson City Tickets\, or an online ticket- CLICK HERE
