SUMMARY:AIA East Tennesse Tri-Cities Tech Session: Leah Gardner and Joan Monaco\, Owners of Gardner Monaco Design
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Leah Gardner and Joan Monaco\, Owners of Gardner Monaco Design.  \nCourse Description: This presentation will cover design\, implementation\, and management strategies used to create ecologically & aesthetically rich landscape systems that balance functional needs with broader goals of increasing biodiversity\, maximizing resilience\, & reflecting regional character. We will focus on real examples and lessons learned in developing impactful\, accessible\, and manageable demonstrations through residential\, commercial\, and public projects. \nHSW Justification: The presentation will highlight ways that an ecologically driven approach to landscape design\, implementation\, and management can positively impact human health and wellbeing by recognizing that humans plan an integral role in the ecology of their environments. Diverse\, resilient landscape systems positively affect environmental factors that directly impact human health and safety including air and water quality\, as well as urban heat island effects\, and access to shade and shelter. Landscape systems can also influence occupant well-being by providing richness of occupant experience\, measurable psychological benefits of interacting with nature\, reduced human and material resource use\, and educational opportunities.Learning Objectives:  \n\nUnderstanding the principals of ecological landscape planning\nIdentifying opportunities for ecological landscape planning in the built environment\nApplying ecological landscape principles to design\, implementation\, and management\n\nCEU Credit: 1 HSW l LU  \nTo secure your seat\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Design Feed: Andrew Fearon\, FAIC
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA East Tennessee for a presentation by Andrew Fearon\, FAIC with Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania’s Stuart Weitzman School of Design.  \nDescription: Globally\, spanning pre-historic to the present day\, most structures found in the built environment rely upon wood as a primary material for both structural and finish components. An understanding of the physical properties as well as the application of this organic material provides the basis for formulating solutions for a broad spectrum of contemporary conservation issues. This presentation seeks to illustrate and address material problems typically encountered by stewards of wooden-built heritage; among them bio-deterioration\, weathering of wood\, diagnostics\, assessment\, and treatment. \nLearning Objective 1:\nTo understand the rationale and methodology for the conservation of wooden heritage. \nLearning Objective 2:\nTo understand the pathology of wood deterioration. \nLearning Objective 3:\nTo understand the methods of diagnostics for wood deterioration. \nLearning Objective 4:\nTo understand methods of intervention\, treatment\, and preventive measures for sustainable practice. \nCE Credit: 1 HSW l LU \nWhen: Tuesday\, August 22nd at 11:50 am EST \n\nDoors Open at 11:30 am\nThe presentation starts at 11:50 am\n\nWhere: In-person and Online via ZOOM \n\nIn-Person: The Foundry\nOnline: Via ZOOM\n\nTickets: Purchase your in-person or online tickets HERE.

SUMMARY:Tri-Cities Tech Session- Nick Shaw\, CPHC\, PHIUS Certified Builder
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA East Tennessee for a presentation by Nick Shaw\, CPHC\, PHIUS Certified Builder\, product consultant for 475 High Performance Building Supply. \nDescription: Foam Free High-Performance Building Enclosures present a clear and practical guide to achieving the highest levels of resilient and sustainable building enclosures while eliminating foam. The growing performance demands of air control\, vapor control\, thermal control\, health\, and sustainability are examined. Foam insulation\, dominant in today’s high-performance marketplace\, is increasingly recognized as hindering many of these building performance goals. Practitioners are therefore wanting and finding new solutions that virtually eliminate foam and provide greater performance. This presentation is a careful look at how to do it. \nLearning Objectives:  \n1. Define what qualities differentiate high-performance enclosures from typical construction and how those qualities are evolving.  \n2. Describe practitioner concerns of foam insulation hindering efforts to meet the evolving high-performance qualities. \n3. Describe how a foam-free enclosure can more robustly achieve the qualities of high performance.  \n4. Describe practical methodologies practitioners can implement to successfully produce a high performance that is foam-free.  \nCE Credit: 1 HSW l LU \nWhen: Tuesday\, May 9th at 11:50 am EST \n\nDoors Open at 11:30 am\nPresentation starts at 11:50am\n\nWhere: In-person and Online via ZOOM \n\nIn-Person: Johnson City Food City\nOnline: Via ZOOM\n\nPurchase ticket HERE
