SUMMARY:Design Feed - July 2025
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the work of Charlotte Perriand’s early career and its influence Le Corbusier’s vision of domestic living in the 1920s and early 1930s.  It explores how changing gender identities and social conditions (such as women working and the so-called servant crisis) affected the atelier’s furniture and interior designs\, examining in particular the impact of an emerging domestic reform movement in Germany and France (especially the writings of Paulette Bernège). One theme that will be considered is the new importance that the kitchen gained in the European modern architecture in the late 1920s. Perriand’s design of the Salon d’Automne apartment of 1929 will be discussed as a pivotal project. \n\n\nWe are no longer selling in-person tickets for this Design Feed to ensure that we have enough food and seats for attendees. SUMMARY:September Design Feed- Kim Yao\, FAIA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kim Yao\, FAIA with the Architecture Research Office in Brooklyn\, NY.  \n\n\n\nDescription: In conjunction with the Fall 2024 publication of the monograph Architecture. Research. Office. SUMMARY:Design Feed- Eric Keune\, AIA\, LEED AP BD+C
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eric Keune\, AIA LEED AP BD+C\, Design Director with Perkins&Will in Boston\, MA.  \nDescription: A glimpse inside Perkins&Will’s Boston practice from the perspective of the studio’s design director. This snapshot of a moment in time will overlook the work of a single studio functioning within the large-scale\, multi-national commercial ecosystem of a larger firm. The work of the studio spans multiple building typologies throughout New England. The work of numerous collaborative authors is organized by a tripartite studio ethos: Purpose\, Place\, & Perspective and connected to New England’s unique modernist legacy of typological and tectonic innovation. The studio’s ongoing search for formal and functional invention is directed towards the familiar but elusive goal of “critical regionalism” that is non-stylistic and propelled by fundamentals such as climate\, performance\, tectonics\, and structural invention. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nQuestioning typology – Learn about the role of typology in unlocking potential or unexpected solutions to common or well-known design challenges.\nFostering “Design Culture” – Learn how regular care and tending of a commercial structure’s internal intellectual and creative environment can maintain awareness and foster curiosity and exploration in a non-academic context.\nRegenerative design—Learn how inventive solutions can address our changing climate. Sea level rise\, storm surge\, shorter winters\, and increasing temperatures are altering ecosystems and requiring design solutions that respond appropriately.\nSearch for Form – Learn how an Iterative design process informs and identifies potential solutions\, enabling the designer to identify “the best” from “all the rest.”\n\nCEU: 1 LU \nCLICK HERE to purchase your ticket.

SUMMARY:Design Feed- Timothy Maddox\, AIA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Timothy Maddox\, AIA\, Principal with DEMX Architecture. \nDescription: This course provides an introduction to regional architecture and its benefits. Contextual Response and Regional Architecture are crucial in keeping an idea of place. DEMX Architecture is located in Fayetteville\, Arkansas\, and strives to respect the local context in which we reside. Vernacular buildings – such as barns\, sheds\, and local housing types each exhibit our most essential responses to the environment. They are built in defining style with context and function being priority. Combining the values of regional architectural principles and modernism\, it allows designers to pursue sustainable practices rooted in efficiency\, appropriate material choices\, and contextual response. DEMX Architecture heavily emphasizes the iterative process to develop their work. This process is accomplished through sketches\, group design critiques\, model making\, and continuous study of the project. \nCEU: 1 LU \nTickets: CLICK HERE to Purchase.

SUMMARY:Design Feed and Annual AIA ETN Business Meeting: Stephanie Kingsnorth\, AIA\, LEED EP
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual business meeting\, where we will recap our current & proposed annual budget\, vote to approve new board members\, and hear a wonderful presentation by Stephanie Kingsnorth\, AIA\, LEED EP Principal at Pfeiffer Partners located in Los Angeles\, CA.  \nDescription: Sustainability is more than just achieving a metric or filling out a checklist. No single metric is used as a universal standard or is best suited for reviving or repurposing existing buildings. Yet\, the embodied carbon and embodied energy that exists within these buildings are undeniable. \nThis session shares insights from both the owner’s and architect’s perspectives on different sustainability approaches. Using two distinct rehabilitation projects as a springboard for learning\, you’ll review the metrics that were used for each project—one originally constructed in the 1930s (currently certified at LEED Gold and aiming for Platinum) and the other built in the 1960s\, which achieved net-zero. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nIdentify the range of sustainability options and approaches available for existing buildings.\nUnderstand which sustainability options are best for your building\, relative to LEED\, net-zero (carbon or energy)\, and other standards/certifications.\nExplore the cost implications for each approach based on original construction materials and architectural styles for existing structures.\nIdentify sustainability elements that may benefit from a hybrid approach to reach the client’s goals\, whether environmental\, financial\, or aesthetic.\n\n1 HSW l LU \nTo purchase your ticket\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:Design Feed: George Smart\, HAIA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: George Smart\, HAIA\, CEO and founder of USModernist in Durham\, NC.  \nJoin AIA East Tennessee & Knox Heritage for cocktails\, conversation\, and a presentation by George Smart\, HAIA\, founder & CEO of USModernist®\, the world’s largest nonprofit educational archive dedicated to the documentation\, preservation\, and promotion of Modernist residential design. \nIn this discussion\, George Smart will explore the basic principles of Modernist design\, why it’s important to our communities\, and what participants can do about preservation\, starting tomorrow. With many of America’s mid-century Modernist architects and their original clients no longer living; their houses have been sold several times; and the local real estate community would just as soon market teardowns as find new\, caring owners. Despite many Modernist houses aging over the 50-year mark\, city councils and preservation groups have a hard time considering Modernist houses to be historic – because 50 years later many still look like the future. With bulldozers continuing to destroy mid-century Modernist houses\, these livable works of art continue to be threatened by rising land prices and disinterested heirs. Not to fear! George will educate attendees on how documenting\, preserving\, and promoting residential Modernist design benefits the architecture and construction industries. To read in more detail about this presentation\, visit bit.ly/octoberdesignfeed. \nThis discussion is 1 AIA HSW I LU Credit. \nThis month’s Design Feed is brought to you by Knox Heritage and Prince Technologies. \nTicket sales are open and limited walk-ins are available! SUMMARY:Design Feed: Michael Sorenson
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Michael Sorenson– Partner and Design Director with Henning Larsen\, located in NYC\, NY. \nDescription: Henning Larsen strives to create sustainable societies where people and nature flourish. Our projects are more than designs; they are solutions to specific challenges. As an interdisciplinary practice working across architecture\, landscape\, urbanism\, interior\, graphic and lighting design\, Henning Larsen challenges conventional practices to co-create\, innovate\, and cultivate desirable futures through design. Founded in 1959 by Danish architect Henning Larsen whose legacy we carry today\, we navigate the complex connections that bind together our built environment\, ecological systems\, and societies at large. \nAt Henning Larsen\, we design architecture as a collection of actions\, not as objects. Rather than autonomous objects\, architecture is a medium for engagement and connection between nature\, people\, and communities. We will explore the 60+ years of our firm and how our methodology has evolved as our practice has expanded from a small studio to a global interdisciplinary practice. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nExplore various approaches to “people-first design” and how nature and community-driven design are integrated into projects in various cultures and climates.\nDiscuss how the studio’s methodology has evolved over 60+ years as the firm has grown from a local studio to a global design practice.\nAnalyze how the studio’s Scandinavian roots has informed design work in a North American context.\nExplore key built and unbuilt work from the firm’s global portfolio that demonstrates different approaches to connecting people\, nature\, and communities.\n\nPurchase your In-Person or Online Ticket HERE.

SUMMARY:Design Feed: Edwin Harris\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP & Billy Askey\, AIA\, LEED AP
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Till It’s DoneSpeakers: Edwin Harris\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP and Billy Askey\, AIA\, LEED AP with Evoke Studio in Durham\, NC. Description:  \n\n\n\n\nOur optimistic design philosophy centers on the essential edict that people matter. Purely pragmatic and engineered solutions for the built environment ignore humanity and place. We prioritize moving beyond preconceived solutions to craft unique responses which inspire\, are wholly appropriate\, and are specific to each place. This approach is rooted in embracing the colorful\, complicated kaleidoscope of histories and cultures to create dynamic and enriching spaces for each community we work with\, regardless of means\, cultural backgrounds\, or initial expectations. The resulting work is unique\, authentic\, and a direct result of the communities we serve. The stories our designs tell are the synthesis of each community’s triumphs\, challenges\, histories\, and hopes. Through this process\, we seek to elevate the voices of communities that have often been ignored and create Place Power. \nIn this discussion\, we will frame the idea of Place Power as the guiding light for our practice and describe the “mechanisms” we employ to create it: \n·       Access\, Agency\, + Opportunity \n·       Embracing Authenticity and Fostering Community \n·       Context and Specificity \n·       Intentional Expression \nThese mechanisms are borne out of a rigorous process of engagement\, research\, and analysis. In listening\, researching\, and interpreting the various input and information received during the engagement\, we create spaces that are intentionally expressive of the ambitions and ideals of the institution and community. The built environment matters—these structures last generations and tell the story of what society prioritizes. Therefore\, we are not flippant about the formal gestures of the building; we are intentional and work with stakeholders to ensure the building conveys the message they want their community and the world to see. \nWe will explore these mechanisms through the lens of a varying range of project scales and typologies to demonstrate their utility and applicability. \n \nTickets and Locations: \nWe are offering this lecture in-person\, and online. \n \n\nKnoxville: \n\nThe Foundry \n\n747 Worlds Fair Park Dr\, Knoxville\, TN 37902\n\n\nPurchase Knoxville Tickets\, or an online ticket- CLICK HERE\n\n\nJohnson City: \n\nFood City\n\n920 North State of Franklin Rd\, Johnson City\, TN\n\n\nPurchase Johnson City Tickets\, or an online ticket- CLICK HERE
