2007 Design AwardsThe AIA East Tennessee Design Awards represent the best design throughout East Tennessee and, as such, create a standard to which we should all aspire when designing for our cities and neighborhoods. This year the jury convened in for an exhausting day in Washington D.C. This year’s jury included Ken Wilson of envision architecture, John Burke of Studio 27 Architecture, and Jose Toha from Grupo7 Architects.
2007 Design Award Recipients New Construction The jury was instructed to judge each design project according to its own merit and to how well it solved the problem addressed. Projects were not judged in competition with each other, but by measuring the architect's performance against each project's potential. Awards were given in three categories: Honor Awards, Honor Citations and Merit Awards. Honor Awards were granted to built projects for overall design excellence. Honor Citations were granted to built projects worthy of recognition because of their design quality. Merit Awards were granted to built projects or to young architects at the discretion of the jury. |

The Weeks Residence demonstrates the variety and quality of space that can be achieved through a very straightforward and simple building frame type. The jury was immediately struck by the beautiful integration of site and space and the honesty of the detail as reflective of the original design. The new design is extremely sensitive to the original architecture and context. Every space, whether interior or exterior, seemed well integrated and spatially reliant on one another. This reading is exemplified by the consistency and precision of the details. The jury also wants to commend the builder for the fine execution and craftsmanship of this beautiful structure.

The Burlington Branch Library in East Knoxville represented for the jury a true commitment to design. As an urban renewal gesture, it brings a sense of respect to the community in an area where this is generally lacking. The jury was immediately struck by the complete transformation of this strip building, which turns is back to the community and addresses mainly the car, to this modest civic building that seems scaled to both the community and the individual bibliophile. Working on a tight budget, the architects chose to look outward and make the most of the context, improving the way the public interacts with the structure, both visually and physically. The expressiveness of the beautiful brickwork is set in contrast to the more Spartan interior, where the focus is on the books and the quality of light.

Honors Citation
Project Team Brandon F. Pace, RA John L. Sanders, AIA
At 609 Kendrick Place, we find an extremely small space where every move is carefully considered to create a flexible and complete usable kitchen. Details such as the reveal of the ceiling soffit to accentuate the light zone which also serves as the main point of access are all carefully coordinated. Nothing seems happenstance or just pushed in. The amount of detail and care are expressed through a full range of drawings and photographs. The choice of the pallet is bold, a bright yellow against the mono-tone steel, but with the subtle white of the ceiling and wall tile, the ensemble reads as restrained, showcasing the activity of the chef. As efficient and dense as the actual appliances and cabinets are, the reading of the space is that less was definitely more.
